Out N Up is a man beater out of the I Form Close 21 personnel package that attacks the boundary with a double-move concept. The blue receiver runs an out and up from the backfield alignment, selling the out route before breaking vertically down the sideline, while the olive receiver runs a deep out that pulls across the field and the red receiver clears out on a deep corner route. The primary read progresses from the out and up route to the shallow crossing out, giving the quarterback a double-move winner against aggressive man corners on the outside.
Pre-snap, check corner depth on the boundary receiver running the out and up route, since a corner playing tight man coverage with no help over the top is the exact matchup this play is designed to exploit. If the defense shows two deep safeties in Cover 2 or Cover 4, the out and up route will run into coverage since the safety has time to rotate over and undercut the vertical break. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone where the olive out route crosses the field, since a smart user can jump that route and create a turnover. Post-snap, key the corner's hips on the outside route, if he opens up to run with the out before the double move even breaks, the quarterback should abort and check down instead of forcing the deep shot. Zone coverage with linebackers dropping into passing lanes at intermediate depth will clog the shallow out route, so identify Cover 3 Zone or Cover 4 shells before committing to this play call.
Use this play against man coverage shells where the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 3 Man pre-snap since the out and up depends on the corner biting on the initial out break.
Look for aggressive user corners who jump underneath routes, since the double move on the blue route will leave them exposed deep the moment they flat foot.
Hot route the shallow olive out route into a deeper crossing route if you see zone defenders sitting in the underneath flat area.
Call this on second and medium or third and short situations where defenses expect a quick throw and are more likely to jump routes.
Pair this with HB Toss or Power O earlier in a series to get linebackers and safeties creeping up before hitting them with the out and up for a big shot play.
