PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of the I Form Close set that shows a center run fake before the QB rolls to his right behind a waggling pocket. The diagram shows three routes: the fullback or TE runs a flat route out of the backfield to the near sideline, a receiver runs an out and up (breaking outside then vertically up the numbers), and a third route runs a deep crosser from the opposite side that clears out over the middle. The blocking scheme pulls linemen with the QB on the waggle to protect the edge on the rollout, and the read progression starts with the flat route as the checkdown, moves to the deep crosser as the intermediate option, and works up to the out and up as the deep shot if the safety bites on the run action.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is stacking the box for run support since this play punishes linebackers and safeties who bite on the center run fake. Watch cornerback leverage on the out and up route, if the corner is playing inside shade he cannot recover once the receiver breaks vertical. Key the flat defender or outside linebacker responsible for the waggle side, if he sits and reads the QB's eyes instead of covering the flat, the checkdown route gets taken away. This play struggles against zone shells with disciplined deep safeties who stay home and against contain rushers who force the QB to throw off platform before completing the rollout. Man coverage with a lurking linebacker in the underneath middle can jump the deep crosser if the QB stares it down too long.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake off Power O or HB Zone Toss from the same personnel group. Check the safety depth pre-snap, if they are creeping down to play run, the deep crosser and out and up will have space behind them. Use the flat route as your first read against blitz looks since the rollout protection can break down quickly against aggressive edge pressure. Pair this with PA Boot Rt and PA Boot Flow in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on rollout tendencies from formation alone. Against man coverage, the out and up is a legitimate double move that beats corners playing outside leverage.
