Breakdown

HB Counter Wk is a weakside counter run out of the I Form Close 21 personnel grouping, designed to pull blockers from the play side to lead the HB through a misdirection gap opposite the initial flow. The diagram shows the FB and offensive line initially stepping toward the counter side, with the HB taking a jab step away from his eventual running lane before receiving the handoff and cutting back weakside behind pulling blockers. This is a power run play built to attack aggressive, downhill linebackers who bite on the initial flow, and the primary read progression starts with the pulling guard or FB kickout block, then bends to the alley if the edge is sealed.

Defensive Reads

Diagnose gap discipline from your linebackers immediately after the snap since Counter Wk is designed to make second level defenders flow hard to the initial step and then get gashed on the cutback. Keep your Mike linebacker home or scrape slowly instead of triggering downhill on run flow, since disciplined linebackers who stay square can blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or sitting in the B gap, as these are the primary threats that shut down the cutback lane. Against a stacked run front or heavy blitz package sent to the counter side, this play struggles because the pulling blocker can get beat before reaching the kickout point. Force the offense to abandon counter runs by aligning a fast flowing linebacker to consistently scrape over the top and force the HB to bounce outside into pursuit.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs like first and ten to keep defenses honest against your zone and stretch runs in the same set. Watch pre-snap for linebacker cheat steps toward the strength of the formation, since Counter Wk is designed to punish overpursuit to the play side. If the defense shows a stacked box with nine or more defenders, consider motioning the FB or checking to a play-action shot like PA Ctr Waggle instead. Pair this play with HB Toss Crack and HB Zone Toss earlier in a drive so linebackers key flow one way, then hit them with the weakside counter cutback for a home run shot. Manually control the pulling blocker if facing a heavy blitz look to ensure the kickout block seals the edge defender.
