Breakdown

PA Flood runs a three level flood concept to the trips side off play action, stacking a deep corner/wheel route, an intermediate out breaking route to the flat area, and a short flat route underneath to stretch a Cover 3 cornerback and safety vertically and horizontally. The backside single receiver runs a deep crossing route working away from the flood, giving you an isolation shot if the defense rotates its safety over to help on the flood. The play action fake to the HB holds linebackers and the underneath defender at the mesh point, opening throwing lanes for the intermediate breaker, and the primary read progression goes flat route first, then the intermediate out, then climb to the deep corner route before working backside to the crosser.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the cornerback to the trips side is aligned deep or shows off man leverage, that tells you if the flat route or the corner route will be open first. Watch the deep safety before the snap, if he is shaded toward the trips side expect Cover 3 rotation and the backside crosser becomes your answer against that rotation. Post-snap, key the flat defender or force defender, if he sinks with the flat route the intermediate out sits down right behind him in the vacated zone. This beats Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells that ask one defender to cover multiple flood levels, but it struggles against a hard match Cover 3 buzz or a Cover 1 with a robber sitting in the underneath flood area since that extra defender can jump the intermediate route. Watch for a blitz off the edge on the flood side, since the play action fake slows your tackle's release and can expose a hot route need if the defense brings a nano blitz look pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or manageable third downs when you expect single high or Cover 3 shells since the flood concept is built to stress one deflated flat defender across three levels. Check the cornerback depth pre-snap, if he is playing off and soft you want to attack the flat and intermediate routes quickly before the play action fake fully develops. Hot route the backside crosser into a deeper dig if you are seeing heavy safety rotation to the flood side, that gives you a true man beater answer against Cover 1 or Cover 3 with a robber. Pair this with Switch Dagger and PA Verts Shot in the same set so the defense has to respect verticals and play action equally, then come back to Flood once they start sitting on shorter routes. On third and medium, prioritize the intermediate out breaker since it settles into the void that Cover 3 defenses leave when the corner backpedals to protect the deep route.
