Breakdown

Bounce Read Option is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Trips TE Offset Wk with 11 personnel. The QB reads the mesh point with the HB, either handing off on the bounce path to the outside or pulling it back for a keep read based on the defensive end's crash angle, while the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme that flows toward the play side to seal running lanes. The three receivers to the trips side release vertically and away from the box, clearing out coverage defenders and giving the QB an open running lane if he pulls the ball. Primary read progression starts with the mesh read on the playside defensive end, then shifts to the second level linebacker fit if the QB keeps it.

Defensive Reads

Watch the playside defensive end's first step, if he crashes hard down the line the QB should pull and keep, if he sits and stays home the handoff on the bounce is the correct read. Overloaded box fronts with an extra linebacker or safety cheating down will clog the interior run lane and force the ball to bounce wider than designed, so check the box count pre-snap. Man coverage on the trips receivers with no help underneath means the perimeter is thin, making the keep read especially dangerous for defenses that do not have a spy or extra run support. Zone shells with a hard flow to the trips side can compress the running lane late, so linebackers reading run action and flowing fast will limit the bounce lane's effectiveness. Look for edge defenders who consistently squeeze inside quickly, this defensive tendency signals that the offense should stay on this play call since it directly punishes crashing ends.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the trips side has a safety rotated down since that tells you whether the bounce lane outside will be light or clogged.

Use motion if available to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and opens up the edge for the bounce read.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick drag or hitch if you see a heavy blitz look, giving the QB a quick answer if he pulls the ball and gets pressured before the mesh point resolves.

This play pairs well with Bounce Inside Zone and HB Power in the same set since all three threaten different gaps but share a similar mesh point, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits.

Save this for early down and manageable distance situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than sub packages that load the box.
