Read Y Corner is a trips passing concept from Shotgun Trips TE Offset Wk that stresses the deep half of the field with a three-level stretch on the trips side. The outside receiver and slot both push vertical stems into corner routes while the inside trips receiver runs a deep out breaking away from the formation, and the backside single receiver runs a skinny post on an option route to hold the far safety. The primary read starts with the Y (or slot corner route) working outside-in, reading the flat defender or curl-to-flat player before working back to the trips out route underneath, making this an effective man and zone beater against single-high shells.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety depth: two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which caps the corner routes and forces the quarterback to check down to the deep out or post. Watch the flat and curl defenders on the trips side, if they sink too deep in zone drops the underneath out route will be wide open before the corner route even develops. User the deep half defender to the trips side, since jumping the corner route early can bait the quarterback into a pick if he does not go through his full progression. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner routes climbing vertically, look for the cornerback trailing without deep support as a green light to sit in a deep zone drop and rob the throw. Disguise a late blitz off the edge to force a quick decision before the corner routes fully break, since the play depends on time for the deep routes to separate.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, this play thrives against single-high looks like Cover 3 and Cover 1 where the corner routes can climb over the top of the cornerback before the safety can rotate over.
If you see two-high shells, prioritize the deep out route and the backside skinny post since the corner routes will be capped by the deep safeties.
Use the Y corner as your first read against Cover 3 zone since the flat defender has to widen with the underneath route, opening a throwing lane behind him.
Pair this play with Verticals and PA Flood in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to bite on shorter routes, then hit the corner route for an explosive gain once the safeties start creeping up.
This play works best on second and long or first down shots when you have a play clock cushion to let the deep routes develop, avoid calling it in short-yardage or hurry-up situations where the routes take too long to break open.
