Return Sprint Comeback is a man beater built off comeback and sprint out concepts from the Trips TE Offset Wk set in Shotgun 11 personnel. The trips side works a comeback route combo to attack cornerbacks playing off coverage or trailing on inside breaking routes, while the backside and TE offset action create a sprint style flow that pulls flow defenders and forces late reactions from linebackers. Primary read progression starts with the boundary comeback route out of trips, then works down to the underneath sprint or flat option if the corner sits and jumps the break.
Look for cornerbacks aligned with heavy outside leverage and deep cushion presnap, this alignment almost guarantees a clean comeback window Watch the flat defender or cornerback if they are playing man coverage and trailing tight to the line, that leverage tells you the comeback will separate hard at the break point Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the trips side is where this play wins consistently since the comeback attacks the corner turning his hips Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a hard flat defender sitting underneath the comeback route can undercut the throw, so read the underneath zone defender before committing to the primary route Watch for late blitz rotation from the slot or nickel defender, since a delayed blitz can collapse the pocket before the comeback has time to break, forcing you into your checkdown or sprint option early
Check the cornerback depth at the snap, if the corner is playing seven yards or deeper off the line this comeback route will sit down in the open grass for an easy pitch and catch
Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses expect a hitch or curl and instead give you extra cushion to work the comeback break
Hot route the underneath receiver into a flat or drag if you diagnose zone coverage presnap since the comeback loses value against a hard zone shell with a flat defender sitting under it
Pair this play in your call sheet with Return Sprint TE Screen and Return Sprint Spot since all three share the same initial motion and sprint action, keeping the defense guessing on run fits and coverage rotation
Snap the ball quickly after the presnap shift to prevent defenses from diagnosing the comeback break based on personnel tendencies, then user the underneath defender to bait a big hit or knockdown attempt
