Breakdown

Return Sprint Spot is a classic Spot concept built to attack zone coverage with a high low read on one side of the field while the backside works as a hi lo changeup. The trips side runs a corner, spot, and flat combination that floods the underneath zones and creates natural picks against man defenders, while the backside receiver runs a return route to occupy a deep defender and open up the middle of the field. The primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits, throw the corner route behind him, if he jumps the corner, work down to the spot sitting underneath, and use the flat route as your checkdown or hot read against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high look, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells are where the corner behind the flat defender hits hardest. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he widens fast to cover the flat route that is your green light to throw the corner behind him. Against Cover 3, key the underneath zone defender near the spot route, if he sinks too deep the flat becomes your quick outlet against a soft cushion. Man coverage combined with a blitz is the biggest threat here, so recognize disguised pressure from the nickel or slot corner and be ready to get the ball out fast on the spot or flat route. Cover 1 or Cover 0 with a robber or lurking linebacker in the middle can undercut the spot route, so if you see a defender sitting in that throwing lane pre snap, shift your primary read to the corner or backside return instead.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the spot route sits down quickly and gives you a rhythm throw against zone shells.

Check the flat defender before the snap, if you see a corner or nickel sitting outside at five yards, that tips zone coverage and the corner route behind him should be your primary shot.

Hot route the backside return route into a deeper comeback or dig against Cover 3 if you feel like the safety is sitting too shallow, this keeps the defense honest and stops them from selling out on the trips side.

Pair this with Switch Dagger or PA Verts Shot in the same set so the defense has to respect vertical shots off similar formations, then come back to Spot to punish zone defenders sitting on shorter routes.

Against man coverage, look immediately to the spot route settling underneath since the natural rub from the trips alignment will spring it open against man beaters like Cover 1 or Cover 0.
