Breakdown

Flood Divide is a trips-side flood concept paired with a backside dig, designed to stretch a defense vertically and horizontally on one side while giving the quarterback a divide read away from the trips. Off the trips alignment, one receiver clears deep, the middle receiver runs an out to the flat, and the third works underneath, creating a true three-level flood, while the backside X runs a hard in-breaking dig against the grain. This is a Cover 3 beater that overloads the flooded side with three defenders having to cover three routes stacked at different depths, and the primary read progression starts with the deep flood route, works down to the flat, and comes back to the backside dig if the flood side is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense is playing a single high safety look, this confirms Cover 3 and opens up the flood concept's three-level stretch against the flat and deep third defenders. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sits too shallow or bites on the underneath route, the corner route behind him should be wide open for a big gain. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender's drop on the backside dig, a slow or late drop against the dig route means the quarterback should come off the flood read and hit the backside window. Man coverage with press corners can disrupt the timing of the flood routes, so be ready to check into the backside dig earlier if you see man leverage across the trips side pre-snap. Watch for a lurking underneath defender sitting in the flat or hook zone who can jump the intermediate flood routes, this is the biggest threat to disrupting the timing of this concept.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the flood side will have a natural numbers advantage over the deep third defender.

Use the flood side as your first read on third and medium to long, the corner route and out route combo forces the corner and flat defender to pick their poison against zone coverage.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, get ready to work the backside dig immediately since the flood concept loses some of its zone-beating advantage against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.

Pair this play with PA Flood or Switch Dagger from the same set to keep defenders guessing between the flood shape and a play-action shot, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Motion or shift the trips formation pre-snap to bait the defense into showing man or zone leverage, then hit the corner route over the top if the cornerback bites on the underneath flat route.
