Dagger Sit is a five-man route dropback pass out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk with 11 personnel. The backside boundary receiver runs a deep out breaking vertical route while the inline slot pushes a corner route stemming from an inside release, forming the classic dagger combo (clear-out plus deep in) on that side of the formation. To the field side, the outside receiver runs a sit route working to the sticks while the flexed TE or third receiver runs a deep dig up the seam and out toward the numbers. This is a zone beater built specifically for Cover 2 and Cover 3, using the vertical clear-out to open the intermediate window for the deep in and sit routes, with the primary read starting on the field side sit route before working to the backside dagger in behind it.
Read the safety depth pre-snap since two deep safeties signal Cover 2 and a single high safety signals Cover 3, both coverages this play is designed to exploit. Post-snap key the flat defender and corner on the sit route side, if they sink too deep on the vertical threat the sit route will be wide open underneath. Watch the middle linebacker or hook defender drop depth, a shallow drop clears the window for the deep in route to sit down behind him. This play struggles against man coverage with a deep safety over the top since the clear-out route has no natural pick and the sit route has no separation leverage. Beware disguised Cover 4 or pattern-match zones where the corner can pattern-match the sit route and the safety can rob the deep in, since this eliminates the natural leverage advantage of the dagger concept.
Pre-snap identify two-high versus one-high safety shells since this play is built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 specifically.
Against Cover 2, hold the safety with the vertical clear-out route then throw the sit route in front of the corner before he can drive downhill.
Against Cover 3, work the deep in route behind the underneath zone drop once the flat defender has fully committed outside.
Use play action or hard counts to freeze linebackers before the snap so the sit route sits down in the natural void between the second and third level.
Pair this play with Sprint Spot or Sticks earlier in the drive so defenders respect underneath quick game, then hit Dagger Sit to punish zone defenders sitting short.
Best called on second or third and medium when the defense is likely to sit in zone rather than bring pressure.
