Mtn Stick Nod Swirl comes out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk with a receiver motioning across the formation before the snap to create a trio look at the snap. Post snap the diagram shows a swirl route from the backfield curling out and up the sideline, a nod route sitting down and breaking back toward the boundary, a stick concept releasing vertically then bending outward, and a deep dig style cross coming from the far side, giving the quarterback a full field, high low man beater with layered zone beater elements built into the stick concept. This is a straight dropback pass play with no run action, and the primary read progression starts with the stick concept underneath, works to the nod sitting down against zone defenders, and finishes with the deep crossing route if the defense sinks its underneath coverage.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, since two high shells signal the deep crosser may have room to work versus single high looks that put more attention on the intermediate stick and nod routes. Watch for a defender shadowing the motion man across the formation, this is the clearest man coverage indicator and should tell the quarterback to expect a rub or pick opportunity with the swirl route. Key the underneath linebacker drops after the snap, if they sink hard to cover the stick and nod combo the deep cross behind them becomes the go to answer against Cover 3 sink or Tampa 2 style drops. Man blitzes with no deep safety help are the biggest threat to this play, since the swirl and stick routes need time to develop and can be disrupted by a fast interior pressure package. Look for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can jump both the nod and the deep crossing route if the quarterback stares down one side of the field too long.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the ball is snapped, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and opens up the swirl route as a quick win against trailing linebackers.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by working the stick to nod combination, since the nod route settling in the honey hole between the flat defender and the deep zone defender is a reliable zone beater on third and medium.
Hot route the swirl runner to a quicker option or convert to a hitch if you see a blitz look pre-snap, since the swirl takes time to develop and can get the quarterback hit against pressure heavy fronts.
Pair this play with Sticks or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick game, then dial up Mtn Stick Nod Swirl to hit the deep crosser once linebackers start jumping underneath routes.
Best called on second or third and medium when you need a chain mover, since the layered route depths give the quarterback answers versus both man and zone without needing a big explosive gain.
