PA Y Cross out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk uses a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before releasing a deep crossing route from the Y (TE) that works from one side of the field all the way across, paired with a deep out and a vertical seam from the receivers on the play side. On the backside, one receiver runs a comeback/curl and the other works underneath as a short check-down option near the flat. This is a man beater at its core: the crosser creates natural separation against man coverage by running defenders into traffic, while the deep out and vertical stretch zone defenders horizontally and vertically. The primary read starts with the Y crosser working across the field, then progresses to the deep out breaking to the sideline, and finally down to the underneath flat route if the play-action fake buys enough time.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they bite hard on the play-action fake and crash toward the line, the Y crosser will have a wide throwing lane behind them. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap. Single high means the crosser has more room to work over the middle, while two high means the deep out to the sideline becomes the better option. Key the cornerback on the deep out route. If he sits in a hard zone drop or shows off-man, expect the quarterback to work the sideline throw rather than the crosser. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot in the middle of the field, since that is the primary threat to jump the Y crosser route and bait an interception. Recognize man coverage indicators like receivers pressed at the line or defenders mirroring pre-snap motion, since that is the green light for the crosser to become the first read.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and medium, when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake out of the Trio HB Wk look.
Check safety depth pre-snap. Two deep safeties who stay put after the play-action fake tells you zone, so lean on the deep out and vertical stretch instead of forcing the crosser.
Against man coverage, trust the Y crosser as your first read since the natural pick traffic from the underneath routes will spring him open against linebackers and slower defenders in man.
Pair this play with Inside Zone or Wide Zone from the same set to sell the run action first, then call PA Y Cross once the defense starts biting on run fits at the linebacker level.
If you see a blitz look pre-snap with linebackers crashing downhill, get the ball out fast on the underneath flat route since the crosser and deep out will take too long to develop.
