Breakdown

RPO Buck Peek out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk is a run pass option built off inside zone action to the backfield, giving the QB a pull read on the buck read while a receiver runs a peek route (a quick out breaking away from the box) as the pass option. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a corner style route up the seam and out, the inside slot running a short out/flat route underneath as the peek, and the frontside running back cutting on a shallow angle route out of the backfield, all tied to zone blocking up front. This is a true RPO that reads the alignment and flow of the second level defenders, with the primary read being the flat/peek route defender: if he sits or flows to run, the QB pulls and throws the peek, if he stays wide the run stays alive underneath.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat or peek defender immediately after the snap, since his reaction to run flow determines whether the offense pulls the ball or hands it off. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: linebackers sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage are vulnerable to the peek route once they commit to run fits. Man coverage on the outside receiver running the corner route can be exploited if the cornerback bites on the underneath route, opening the vertical break upfield. Defenses that stay disciplined with outside contain and keep a defender spying the QB pull tend to shut this down, since it removes both the run lane and the peek throwing window. User controlled defenders should stay off aggressive user blitzes here, since the quick peek and angle routes punish delayed pursuit; instead sit a user in the shallow zone to jump the underneath throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when the defense is showing base personnel and no obvious blitz look.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in man or zone: if a defender is sitting inside the box crashing hard on run action, the peek route to the flat is your automatic pull read.

Against zone shells with linebackers reading run first, take the pull and hit the peek route quickly before the flat defender can recover.

Pair this play with RPO Alert Buck or RPO Read Buck Bubble in the same set to keep defenses honest, since the run action and route combos look identical pre-snap but attack different leverage points.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the backfield angle route to a quicker check down or audible to a play like Sprint Rub Flat to punish overaggressive fronts.
