Breakdown

Wide Zone out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk is an outside zone run play with the HB aligned to the arrow side, showing a five man offensive line flowing laterally toward the play call arrow with the TE and receivers left in blocking or route stem stance at the snap. This is a zone run play, not a play-action or RPO look based on the diagram, designed to stretch the defensive front horizontally before the back picks a crease. The primary read progression for the HB is a backside to frontside track: press the line hard to the play side, read the play side tackle and TE double team or reach block first, then work through the double team, the guard pull or combo block, and finally the cutback lane if the edge gets sealed.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker depth and width pre-snap, since fast flowing linebackers who crash hard to the arrow side are exactly what this zone stretch is designed to exploit. Watch for a bubble or 4i technique from the defensive line to the play side, since that alignment can clog the reach block and force an early cutback. User the backside linebacker or a spy defender to sit on the cutback lane, since ball carriers coached to press and cut back will look for that soft spot if the edge holds. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since those shells commit extra defenders to the run fit and can outnumber the zone stretch if the safety reads run fast. Look for a nano blitz or edge crash off the play side, since an unblocked defender crashing down before the tackle can climb will blow up the reach block and force a negative play.

Usage Tips

Run this out of neutral or run heavy personnel counts like 2nd and short to avoid tipping the play to a stacked box.

Check the defensive front pre-snap for a heavy box count or an overloaded edge to the play side arrow, and audible to Wide Zone Read or the backside Inside Zone if the numbers are unfavorable.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap look to bait linebackers into flowing too fast, which opens up the cutback lane on the backside.

Pair this call with RPO Alert Buck or RPO Buck Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the zone stretch and the quick bubble or peek throw off similar line motion.

Sequence Wide Zone early in a drive, then come back later with Wide Zone Read or Speed Option once linebackers start over pursuing the zone stretch, since those plays punish exactly that tendency.
