Verticals out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk (11 personnel) sends four receivers vertical down the field while the HB releases out of the backfield on a check release swing to the flat. Reading the diagram, the two inside receivers push straight up the seams, the outside receiver at the top runs a go route up the sideline, and the third receiver stems outside before breaking vertical, creating a true four verticals stretch across the width of the field. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater designed to attack deep zone drops with vertical stem stress, with the HB check release serving as the underneath outlet against man coverage or if the pocket collapses.
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap since Cover 2 forces a hard choice between the seam and the sideline vert, favoring the throw to the receiver who wins inside leverage. A single high safety indicates Cover 3, so key his post-snap drop direction and throw opposite his rotation to hit the open vertical route. If corners show hard outside shade with no safety help over the top, expect man coverage and be ready to check down to the HB releasing into the flat. Look for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the deep middle hole (lurk technique) since he can rob the inside seam route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Fast interior pressure or a nano blitz off the edge is the biggest threat to this play since it takes time to develop, so account for blitz timing and get the ball out before the fourth or fifth vertical route fully clears the second level.
Pre-snap, identify two high safeties versus one high safety to determine if you are getting Cover 2 or Cover 3 shell before the snap.
Against Cover 2, target the seam between the corner and safety since the safeties have to widen to cover the outside verts, opening a throwing lane up the pipe.
Against Cover 3, throw off the middle of field safety's initial drop; if he opens to one side, work the vertical route on the opposite hash.
Hot route the HB to a flat route or keep him on the check release swing as a built in answer versus man coverage or heavy pressure looks.
Pair this play with Sticks or RPO Alert Buck in the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow zone beaters and this deep shot, forcing linebackers to respect both levels.
