Breakdown

Mtn Spot Smash out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk combines a smash concept to one side with a spot concept to the other, all working off a quick pre-snap motion. The diagram shows the outside receiver on the boundary side running a deep corner route (gold) while the inside slot runs a quick flat route underneath, creating the classic smash high-low read on that side. To the field side, the outside receiver pushes vertical then breaks to the corner (gold), the tight end runs a hitch or spot route at the sticks (blue), and the motioning receiver runs a quick flat/swirl route underneath (red) with the running back releasing to the flat as an outlet. This is a zone beater designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, with the primary read progressing from the corner route against the deep half defender down to the underneath flat and spot routes if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage, two deep safeties splitting the field wide open the corner route read against Cover 2. Watch the flat defender and slot corner at the snap, if they sink too deep on the corner route the underneath flat and spot routes will be wide open. Man coverage with the motion defender trailing across the formation signals a mismatch opportunity on the spot route running away from leverage. A single high safety rotating late often signals Cover 3, which means the corner route may get squeezed but the spot and flat combo underneath stays open. Watch for a corner blitz off the edge on the smash side, since the quick flat route can be used as a hot route answer if the outside corner shows blitz alignment pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and can attack the spot route against a trailing defender.

Against Cover 2, target the corner route on the smash side since the safety has to choose between the deep corner and the flat, this is the primary read on early downs.

Against Cover 3, work the spot route and the underneath flat since the flat defender has to widen for the corner, opening a soft spot in the zone for the tight end.

This play works best on second or third and medium since it takes a full read progression and a beat longer to develop compared to quick game concepts.

Pair this with Sprint Smash or Sprint Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing between drop back reads and rollout reads while using the same route concepts.
