Defensive Reads

Look for linebackers flowing hard to the sweep side immediately after the snap, since disciplined backside pursuit is what shuts this run down before it turns the corner. Man coverage on the outside receivers frees up an extra body in the box, so a heavy front with man coverage behind it is the best defensive answer to this concept. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with soft corners can get gashed if the safety does not fill the alley quickly since the QB keep option attacks that exact space. User the edge defender yourself in critical situations and stay disciplined on the mesh point read, forcing the QB to make a decision under duress often results in a blown assignment for the offense.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz before the snap so you know whether the edge defender is crashing down or staying home.
Key on the alignment of the defensive end or outside linebacker on the play side, if he sits wide the give read stays hot, if he squeezes inside pull the ball and attack the alley.
This play hits best on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are in base run fits rather than sub packages loaded with extra DBs.
