Breakdown

Reload RPO Alert Buck lines up out of Shotgun Trio HB Wk with 11 personnel and shows the HB running a buck sweep style handoff read to the boundary while a receiver runs a return motion sweep behind the line before the snap. The offensive line executes an inside zone run blocking scheme, giving the QB a true give or keep RPO read based on the alert defender's reaction to the run flow. This is a run first RPO designed to attack light boxes and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the alert key defender: if he crashes down on the run flow, pull and throw off the leverage he vacates, otherwise hand the ball off on the buck sweep action.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alert defender's run fit before and after motion, since his crash or hold decision is the entire trigger for this RPO. Man coverage shells with the corner following the returning motion man leave the alert defender isolated in run support, so lean run in that look. Zone shells with a linebacker sitting flat footed at the mesh point are baiting the give read, so be ready to pull if he widens late. Overloaded run blitzes toward the sweep side should trigger an immediate pull and throw since the alert key will almost always crash. Deep two high safety shells that stay disciplined post snap tend to shut down the perimeter throw option, forcing you into the buck sweep run.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the sweep side, which tells you the alert defender's leverage before the snap.

Count the box defenders before motion resolves. If the count is six or fewer in the box, favor the give on the buck sweep action.

This play pairs well with RPO Read Buck Bubble and RPO Buck Read Bubble in the same set since all three attack similar buck sweep flow but give you different perimeter throw options to mix up alert defender keys.

Save this for early down and manageable distance situations where defenses expect run first, since the sweep action punishes downhill linebacker flow.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pressure off the edge, get the ball out on the pull read quickly rather than holding for the sweep to develop.
