Y-Sail out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex is a classic sail concept built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with three levels on the strong side. The Y (TE) runs the corner route breaking outside toward the sideline, the flat route underneath it sits at the sticks, and the vertical route from the stack climbs up the seam behind the corner to stretch the deep defender. On the backside, the receiver runs a deep comeback and the running back releases into the flat, giving you a full-field high low read if the strong side is capped. The primary progression starts with the corner route against the deep defender, works down to the flat if the corner sits, then comes back to the backside comeback or checkdown if the strong side is jumped.
Defensive Reads
Watch the corner over the stack receivers presnap, if he is playing outside leverage in press he is vulnerable to the seam release working underneath him. Post snap key the strong side flat defender, if he sinks with the corner route the flat is wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Against Cover 3 the deep third defender to the strong side has to cover both the corner and the seam, forcing a hole in the zone that the corner route should win if thrown with timing. Man coverage beaters here rely on natural rub from the stack alignment, if the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 0 with a lurking linebacker underneath, expect him to sit on the flat route and jump any shallow crossing patterns. Disguised blitzes with a nickel or slot corner blitzing off the stack side can get home quickly, so check protection assignments and be ready to check the running back into a chip or hot route the underneath route to a quick outlet.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify if the safety is showing two high or rotating to single high, since Y-Sail is designed to punish Cover 2 corners who jump the flat and leave the corner route open behind them.
If you see Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, hot route the flat man to a shallow drag or slant to sit underneath the zone drop instead of running him into traffic.
Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone coverage rather than bring pressure.
Pair Y-Sail with HB Slip Screen or PA Jailbreak Screen out of the same set to bait aggressive user linebackers into flowing to the flat, opening up the corner and seam routes behind them.
Against man coverage look immediately to the seam route from the stack alignment since the natural rub from the stack release creates early separation versus press or man defenders.
