Salem Pivot out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex features a pivot route concept on the left side where the stacked receiver breaks outside then plants and pivots back to the middle of the field on a deep dig, while the underneath receiver runs a flat route to occupy the shallow zone or hook defender. On the right side the TE runs a corner post that breaks toward the sideline before cutting upfield, and the outside receiver runs a deep crossing route from right to left underneath the corner post, creating a natural rub concept against man coverage. This is a man beater built around pick and pivot leverage, with the deep crosser as the primary read against man and the pivot route working as the answer versus zone drops that sit on the flat.
Identify the safety alignment before the snap, a two high shell suggests zone coverage where the pivot route becomes the primary answer. Watch the flat defender and hook linebacker on the pivot side, if they sink too deep the flat route opens up as a quick outlet. Track the corner responsible for the deep crossing route, in man coverage the rub from the stack alignment often creates a step of separation that shows up immediately after the break. Beware of a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this can jump the deep crosser or the pivot route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and strong safety help over the middle is the toughest shell to beat, since it takes away both the pivot and the crosser simultaneously.
Check pre-snap for single high or two high safety shells before deciding between the pivot route and the deep crosser as your first read.
Against man coverage with no help over the top, key on the deep crossing route since the rub from the stack alignment creates natural separation off the line.
Against zone coverage, work the pivot route since it settles in soft spots behind the flat defender and in front of deep zone drops.
Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where the underneath flat route can also be a checkdown if the deeper routes are covered.
Pair Salem Pivot with Curl Combo or Levels from the same set to keep defenses guessing between shallow crossers and deeper in cuts, forcing linebackers to widen their drops.
