Breakdown

PA Read out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex uses a play-action fake to sell run action before attacking downfield off a stacked receiver alignment. On the left side, the stacked receivers run a vertical seam and a corner route stacked off each other to stretch the safety and clear the deep half, while the outside receiver runs a shallow crosser underneath. On the right side, the TE runs a corner route out of the backfield stem while the flanker runs a shallow drag across the field, giving the quarterback a high-low read against zone or a natural pick against man coverage. The primary progression starts with the corner route on the right against single high safeties, then works to the crossing routes underneath if the deep shot is not there.

Defensive Reads

Look for single high safety alignment before the snap, this tells you the corner routes on both sides have room to work against Cover 3 or Cover 1 If both safeties are deep and split pre-snap, expect the underneath crossers to be your answer since the corners will be squeezed by two deep defenders Watch the play side linebacker depth after the snap, a shallow drop signals zone coverage and opens the crossing routes, while an aggressive blitz key means the play action fake will hold him just long enough to hit the shallow route User controlled defenders sitting on the crosser or spying the quarterback are the biggest threat to this concept, if you see a user in a shallow zone drop over the middle, reset to the corner route on the strong side instead Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties and hard corners at the line will jump the outside corner routes, so bail to the underneath crossing combo as your checkdown against that shell

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate your first read to the underneath crossers since the deep corner routes will be capped

Use the play action fake to freeze linebackers on early down and distance situations like first and ten or second and short, this play loses value in obvious passing downs against aggressive pass rush teams

Hot route the flanker running the shallow drag into a quick out if you are facing a hard trap zone team that sits underneath crossers

Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone from the same set to keep the defense honest on run fits, then come back to PA Read once linebackers start biting on run action

Against man coverage, trust the stacked release on the left to create natural rub separation for the corner route, this beats press man and Cover 1 lurk defenders
