PA Read is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex that sells the run fake before attacking the seams and flat. The stacked receivers to the left run a vertical seam and a corner route, creating a natural high-low stretch on that side, while the tight end runs a deep dig from the right flank crossing the field and the outside receiver on the right runs a shallow drag into the flat. The primary read progression starts with the corner route off the play-action fake, works to the deep dig crossing from the right, and checks down to the flat route underneath if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since PA Read is built to exploit single high looks where the corner route can split the difference between the deep safety and the cornerback. Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the play-action fake, that flow confirms the underneath area is open for the flat and dig routes. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, key the flat defender's drop, if he sinks with the crosser you have a natural window for the corner route sitting down in the honey hole. Beware user-controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field on the dig route crossing pattern, since a disciplined user linebacker can jump that route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping the flat route can shut this play down quickly, so recognize press alignment on the outside receiver pre-snap and be ready to work the corner route or dig instead of forcing the flat.
Usage Tips
Use PA Read on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when the defense is respecting run tendencies from Inside Zone or HB Draw in this set. Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow to stop the run, the play-action freeze gives the corner route and dig time to develop behind them. Hot route the flat runner into a deeper option or a spot route if you see zone drops flooding the underside of the coverage. Against man coverage look immediately to the corner route off the stack since the natural pick from the seam runner creates separation versus press or trail technique. Pair this with HB Slip Screen and Inside Zone earlier in a series to condition the defense into biting on run action, then call PA Read to punish overaggressive linebackers and safeties creeping into the box.
