Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake the screen and flat route will be wide open behind them. Identify the flat defender pre snap, a soft zone drop from the corner or nickel signals the screen will hit clean. Key the safety alignment over the stack, single high shells leave the vertical route with less help which opens up a shot play if the screen is taken away. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the flat, this is the biggest threat to jump the screen route and blow up the play behind the line. Disciplined edge rushers who stay home on play action and refuse to bite on the fake take away the timing of the screen and force a negative play.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in run heavy personnel situations where the defense is showing base run fits so the linebackers bite on the play fake.

Check the flat defender pre snap, if the corner or nickel is sitting soft in a zone drop the screen to the flat is there immediately.

If the defense shows man coverage with the corner pressed on the stack, hot route the vertical route into a quick out or slant to give yourself a faster man beater option.

Pair this play with Outside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so the defense has to respect the run fake before you dial up the screen, this keeps linebackers honest and slows their pursuit.

Avoid calling this against aggressive blitz packages with contain rushers who stay home, since disciplined edge defenders can blow up the screen before it develops.
