Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing blitz or an overload front, since a hard sell up front is exactly what this screen wants to bait. Watch for a defensive lineman or linebacker with screen recognition who sits and reads the QB rather than rushing, as they will blow up the play before blockers get set. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no underneath zone defender flowing to the flat is the ideal shell to attack, since it leaves the alley wide open for the HB. If the defense drops into zone with a linebacker spying the backfield or a corner sitting in a flat zone, the screen has almost no room to develop and should be avoided. Post-snap, track whether the defensive line's pursuit angles collapse toward the RB immediately, which signals a defense that consistently defends screens and this play should be shelved for the series.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see six or more defenders showing pressure pre-snap since the naked rush plays directly into the screen setup.
Use the shallow drag and deep crosser as clear-out routes, do not check them down early or you will collapse the timing of the screen.
Pair this with Inside Zone or HB Draw earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying run action out of the same personnel, softening their pursuit angles on the screen.
Avoid calling this into zone-match or Cover 4 shells where linebackers sit and read the backfield, since screen defenders can sniff out the RB leak.
Best used on second and long or after two straight run plays when the defense is likely to bring extra rushers or play off-man on the perimeter.
