HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex is a designed screen pass that gets the running back leaking out to the flat while the offensive line sets up outside blockers in front of him. On the diagram, both outside receivers push vertical stems downfield to hold corners and safeties, the TE from the stack works underneath before turning up, and the slot receiver clears out to the opposite flat to occupy that side of the field. The HB releases short to the flat as the primary and only real read, relying on blockers getting out ahead of him once the ball is caught.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with press corners and blitzing linebackers is the ideal look for this screen since it pulls defenders away from the HB release point. If you see the defense spy the running back or a linebacker sit flat footed at the mesh point, the screen is dead and you should check to a different play in the set. Watch for a user linebacker staying home in the box after the snap, which signals a lurk read designed to jump the screen route. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers dropping into short zones can shut this down quickly since defenders are already sitting in the throwing lane. Heavy zone blitz calls that send extra rushers but leave underneath zone defenders in place are the worst matchup for this screen, so check the play if you diagnose that pre-snap.

Snap this on early down and distance or after a string of aggressive blitzes to slow down user pressure and nano blitz packages.

Watch the pre-snap alignment for overloaded fronts or heavy blitz looks, since screens punish extra rushers who commit hard upfield.

Delay the pass button press slightly after the snap so your linemen have time to release and get in front of the HB before you throw.

Pair this call with HB Draw and Outside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect the same backfield action every snap, then hit them with the slip screen when they start crashing downhill.

Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers home, since spy or scrape defenders can blow it up before blockers get set.
