Breakdown
Fade Out is a three man route concept out of the Stack Y-Flex Shotgun set that stacks two receivers on the outside while sending the flexed TE on a shallow drag across the field. The two stacked receivers release vertically into fades up the sideline, clearing space underneath, while the TE runs the drag all the way across the formation to the opposite sideline as an outlet against man coverage or a crosser to hit zone voids. The primary read starts with the back side fade to the boundary if you see a favorable one on one matchup, then works to the TE drag underneath if the fades are blanketed or the defense drops into deep zone shells.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerback depth at the snap: if the corner assigned to the stacked receivers bails immediately into a deep drop, that signals zone coverage and the fades will likely be doubled or capped. Key the flow of the underneath linebackers once the ball is snapped, since a linebacker who sinks with the TE drag will take away the easy checkdown and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Identify any user controlled defender lurking near the drag route's crossing point, since a jumped route there can result in a pick six if the quarterback is not aware of the threat. Against man coverage, look for a safety cheating over the top of the stacked receivers pre-snap, which indicates a bracket coverage designed to shut down the fade route entirely. If the defense shows a two high shell that rotates down into a single high look after the snap, the fades become high risk throws and the drag route becomes the only reliable option to move the chains.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap: two high safeties usually mean the fades are covered deep, so plan to work the TE drag underneath instead of forcing the vertical shot.
If you see man coverage indicators like tight press corners or a single high safety rotating late, take a shot at the backside fade early since the double stack can create natural rub leverage.
Use the TE drag as your built in hot route answer against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops, since it settles into the void behind underneath linebackers and in front of deep zone defenders.
This play works best on second or third and medium situations where the defense is guessing between run and pass, since the drag route can pick up chunk yardage after the catch if linebackers bite on any run action.
Pair Fade Out with Salem Pivot or Corner Strike in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both plays start with similar stacked releases but attack different levels of the field, forcing defenders to hesitate on their initial read.
