HB Draw out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex is a designed delayed handoff that shows pass protection at the snap before the offensive line transitions to run blocking, freezing the front seven and linebackers who are keying pass rush lanes. The stacked receivers to one side and the tight end release into their route stems as decoys, pulling second level defenders out of the box while the back sells pass pro before taking the handoff and hitting the natural crease. This is a pure run play built to punish aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read being the interior gap created by the initial guard and center combo blocks, and the back should press downhill and pick his lane based on which side the defensive tackles get moved.
Identify if the defense is in a Cover 3 or Cover 1 shell with linebackers reading run first, since disciplined backers who stay square will diagnose the draw quickly and limit the gain. Watch for defensive tackles crashing hard upfield off the snap, that aggressive first step is exactly what this play is designed to exploit for a cutback lane. Key the middle linebacker's initial drop, if he bites on the pass read and opens his hips to cover, the draw will hit for solid yardage before he can recover. Look for blitz packages or nano blitzes that send extra rushers off the edge, since those defenders will overrun the play and vacate the interior running lanes. Beware of spy techniques or defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone, as a disciplined spy or lurking linebacker can blow this play up before it develops.
Call this play when the defense shows heavy blitz packages or aggressive four man rush upfield, since the delayed action exploits defenders shooting gaps.
Use it on early downs in normal or medium distance to stay unpredictable and set up play-action shots later in the drive from this same formation.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, consider checking to a pass instead since the draw loses value against disciplined run fits.
Pair this with Inside Zone and PA Jailbreak Screen from the same set so the defense cannot key on the offensive line's initial pass set as a run or pass tell.
Take manual control of the fullback or extra blocker if available and lead your back through the widest crease rather than trusting AI blocking on the first level.
