Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment since stacked or blitzing linebackers can beat this play to the hole before blockers get set. Look for safeties creeping into the box, which signals run support and a loaded front that can shut this play down if you do not have a hot route counter. This play struggles against interior nano blitzes and gap-shooting defensive tackles who penetrate before the double team forms. It beats base fronts and light boxes where linebackers are reading rather than attacking, giving the HB a clean lane. Post-snap, watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill, since a disciplined backside linebacker or safety filling the cutback lane will erase the play's main advantage.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains without tipping your hand. Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders, since it lacks the deception of a play-action or RPO tag to punish extra run defenders. Pair it with HB Draw and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits. Mix in PA Jailbreak Screen and PA Read afterward to capitalize on linebackers creeping up after seeing repeated dive runs from this personnel.
