Drive H Wheel is a designed Cover 4 beater out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex that isolates the H-back on a wheel route out of the backfield against a stacked outside look. The stack receivers run a deep dig from the outside man and a drive route underneath crossing back the other way, while the single receiver side runs an outlet route breaking to the sideline and a corner route stemming vertically up the numbers. The primary read starts with the wheel route attacking the seam vacated by a rolled up quarter defender, then progresses to the deep dig on the drive concept, and finally to the underneath drive route as a checkdown against tight man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a two high or one high safety shell, since Cover 4 and Cover 2 with slow corner reactions are the primary targets for the wheel route beating them vertically. Watch the flat or curl to flat defender at the snap, if he sinks into a zone drop instead of staying flat footed and reading the backfield, the wheel route will be wide open in the void behind him. If the defense shows man coverage with a linebacker matched on the H-back, expect the drive concept traffic to create a natural pick, so account for potential DPI or pick calls and be ready to move to the dig route instead. Cover 3 with a hard flowing strong safety to the flat can undercut the wheel route quickly, so if the safety diagnoses the route immediately, check down to the drive route or the outlet route on the backside. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are dangerous for this play if the offensive line cannot hold up, since the wheel and dig routes both take time to develop, so respect any pre-snap linebacker walk up as a possible nano blitz look.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells where the outside cornerback has to sink into a deep quarter, since the wheel route will run right past him if he does not carry it collision to collision.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap glance to check if the flat defender or a linebacker is spying the H-back before the snap, because man coverage on the wheel is a touchdown if the linebacker gets picked off by traffic underneath.

Hot route the drive route into a deeper crosser against zone heavy defenses to sit it down in soft spots between the linebacker level and the safety, or leave it as is versus man to clear space for the wheel.

Pair this play with HB Draw or Outside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits, then hit Drive H Wheel once the defense starts flowing hard to the backfield action.

Best called on first and second down in the open field where defenses are more likely to sit in base zone shells rather than aggressive man blitz packages that could jump the wheel route early.
