Breakdown

Double Corner out of Shotgun Stack Y-Flex sends both outside receivers on vertical corner breaks, one from the stack side cutting hard away on a deep out at the sideline and one from the trips side working a slower developing corner route up the boundary, while the stacked receiver runs an under route back across the field and the inside slot receiver runs a shallow crossing route underneath everything. The HB stays in to help protect against the four man rush shown, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to climb the ladder from the shallow crosser to the deep corners. This is a man beater concept built to attack off man leverage with the corner breaks stacking natural picks while the shallow crosser gives you a built in checkdown versus zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep at 10 plus yards they are likely playing a deep half shell that can squeeze both corner routes. Watch the cornerback press alignment, tight press man leverage on the stacked receivers signals man coverage where the corner breaks and rub action will create natural separation. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers, if they sink hard into the shallow crosser's lane it opens throwing lanes to the deep corner routes on either side. Look for a user controlled defender flowing to the field side corner route since that is the more obvious deep shot, the boundary side corner and the shallow crosser become the counter reads. Cover 3 with a deep middle robber or a Tampa 2 with a rangy deep safety can take away both corner routes, so if you see that shell pre-snap be ready to check down to the shallow cross instead.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and long when you need a chunk play and the defense is likely to play deep zone or press man on the outside.

Pre-snap, check for two high safeties versus single high because the corner routes need room to work against a soft shell rather than getting squeezed by an over the top safety.

If the corner shows blitz off the edge, hot route the HB to a quick flare or keep him in for extra protection since the play only has four in the pattern otherwise.

Combine this with Corner Strike or Y-Sail earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the same stack alignment, then hit Double Corner when they start jumping the underneath routes.

Pair this with HB Draw or Inside Zone on run downs to keep the defense honest before coming back to the corner breaks on a passing down.
