Inside Zone from Shotgun Stack Y-Flex is a zone run play design with the HB aligned next to the QB, tasked with reading the interior gaps as the offensive line flows in unison to one side. The diagram shows the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme, sealing lanes for the HB while the outside WRs and stacked TE/WR set at the top run off coverage with vertical releases to occupy the corners and safeties. This is a run play built to beat zone fronts and light boxes, with the primary read progression starting at the play side double team, then bouncing to the backside cutback lane if the initial hole is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line they are keying run and will fill gaps fast, so bounce the play outside if you control a lead blocker. Identify if the defense is running a nano blitz off the edge, since fast interior pressure can blow up zone runs before the line sets its blocks. Key the safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety usually means the box is loaded and the cutback lane will be tighter. User the play side linebacker or spy the middle of the field defender to prevent a quick tackle for loss if the defense diagnoses zone runs early. This play struggles against heavy eight man fronts and gets stopped by disciplined gap control defenses, but it consistently gains yards against base 4-3 or 3-4 looks with light boxes and soft zone shells.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and count the box, if there are six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a clean angle to hit. Look for the stacked WR alignment at the top of the diagram to identify if the defense is showing man or zone, since a hard press call often signals man coverage and a soft shell signals zone. Use motion or a quick audible check if the defense shows an overloaded front to one side, since this zone scheme is sensitive to gap integrity. Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up play-action shots later in the set like PA Jailbreak Screen or PA Read. Pair this with HB Draw and HB Slip Screen in the same drive to keep linebackers hesitant and open up cutback lanes on Inside Zone.
