Wheel Trail out of Shotgun Split Y Off lines up with a stacked backfield and a Y off tight end, sending the outside receiver on a deep dig across the middle while the inline TE runs a corner route to clear the flat. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route, working from the flat vertically up the sideline as the trail man underneath, giving you a natural high low against man coverage. The other backfield back runs an under route crossing the field as a shallow zone beater, while the backside receiver stems vertically to hold the safety. This is a man beater at its core, using the wheel and corner combo to stress a single defender in coverage, with the dig as your primary read against zone drops underneath.
Defensive Reads
Watch for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners aligned tight on receivers and a linebacker shaded over the HB, this signals the wheel route will win. If the defense shows a two high safety look with press corners, expect the dig route to be the primary target since the wheel may get squeezed by a deep half safety. Post-snap, identify if underneath linebackers widen with the HB on the wheel, this confirms man coverage and opens up the dig behind them. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, this can jump the dig route if the QB stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the wheel route, so if you see this shell rotate your eyes to the dig or the crossing route from the second back.
Usage Tips
Check the pre-snap alignment of the defender over your HB, if it is a linebacker or slower defender you have a mismatch on the wheel route against man coverage.
Your first read should be the deep dig crossing the field, especially versus zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where the underneath defenders sink late.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, peek the wheel route early since it creates a natural pick against trailing defenders.
Use this play in a sequence after running Backs Cross or Mtn H Angle to condition the defense to shallow crossers, then hit the wheel for an explosive gain when they jump the underneath routes.
Best called on second and medium or third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage, since the dig and wheel combo punishes soft zone drops.
