Corner Strike out of Shotgun Split Y Off sends the backside receiver on a deep corner route while the frontside slot runs a vertical seam that clears into a corner breakoff of his own, stacking two corner routes to one side of the field. The backside outside receiver runs a deep out and the remaining backs and TE work shallow crossers underneath to hold linebackers and occupy the middle of the field. This is a man beater built around natural pick and stack action, with the two corners on the strong side forcing safeties and corners to make tough choices in trail technique, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the seam to corner breakoff, and checks down to the underneath crosser if both corners are covered.
Defensive Reads
If the defense shows two deep safeties before the snap, expect the corner routes to be capped and the underneath crossers to be your best answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells. Watch the flat defender at the snap since he determines whether the underneath crosser has room to work or gets squeezed by a zone drop. Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play hurts defenses most because the stacked corner routes create natural rub and separation that trail technique cannot recover from. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play quickly since the deep corner routes take time to develop, so watch for widened defensive ends or overloaded fronts as a blitz key. Lurking linebackers sitting in the intermediate middle of the field can jump the seam to corner breakoff route, so identify any defender showing depth and width in the throwing lane before committing to that route in your progression.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, look for single high safety looks since the stacked corner routes on the strong side put max stress on one deep defender who cannot help both. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers before the snap and confirm if you are seeing man or zone based on defender leverage over the slot receiver. Hot route the underneath crosser into a flat route if you see Cover 2 to give yourself an easy zone beater outlet against the corner defender squatting on the sideline. This play hits best on 2nd and long or 3rd and medium to long when defenses are more likely to play zone drops that create seams behind the linebackers. Pair Corner Strike with H Choice or Mtn H Angle from this same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and the deep double corner shot, forcing linebackers to respect multiple route depths off similar formation looks.
