The outside receiver runs a deep post while the backside receiver runs a skinny post crossing the field, giving this play both man and zone beating properties depending on the coverage shell. The primary read starts with the H option route in the flat, then progresses to the Y dig sitting down in the middle of the field against zone.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender pre-snap, if he is sitting outside in a hard zone drop, the H option should break inside behind him for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker depth, since a shallow drop from him signals zone coverage and opens up the Y dig for a big gain over the middle. If the cornerback aligned on the X receiver is playing off coverage with outside leverage, expect the corner route to be the primary window against man coverage. Watch for a user controlled safety rotating late to the deep middle, which can jump the post route or the Y dig if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against a hard double team of the flat and the middle read simultaneously, common in Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sky looks with disciplined linebackers.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high or single high safety look, since the H option route reacts differently against man versus zone leverage. Against man coverage, the H back should break outside for the swing since defenders in man will overplay the flat, so hot route him to a quick out if you see a linebacker shaded inside. Against zone coverage, let the H option sit down and work to the middle where soft spots exist between the underneath zone defenders. This play pairs well with Mtn Lead Swing and Mtn Lead Swing Spacing since the pre-snap motion and backfield action look identical, keeping defenders guessing on run versus pass. Use this on second and medium to long situations where the defense may sit back in zone, since the Y dig and H option combo consistently finds soft spots against four man zone drops.
