Breakdown

Mtn H Angle is a shotgun passer from the Split Y Off set that puts an angle route from the backfield underneath a flat route and two vertical clear outs. Presnap motion brings the H back into the flat while the running back releases into an angle route out of the backfield, the TE runs a corner strike breaking outside off the initial vertical stem, and the X receiver clears vertically up the numbers to occupy the deep defender. This is a man beater built around the RB angle route creating natural leverage against linebackers, with the primary read starting on the angle route out of the backfield, then working to the flat motion man, and finally to the corner breaking route if a linebacker or safety erases the middle.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify whether the linebackers are showing man or zone alignment over the backfield, tight man leverage on the running back signals man coverage that the angle route will exploit. Watch the flat defender assigned to the motion man, if he sinks late or gets picked by traffic near the line the flat route becomes an easy checkdown. Post snap, track the middle linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the middle of the field, if he widens with the angle route he opens a throwing window behind him for a scrambling quarterback or late developing route. This concept struggles against a hard zone blitz with an underneath spy since the angle route has nowhere to work if the spy sits directly in the throwing lane. Cover 3 with a sky safety over the flat can take away both the flat route and the corner breaking route, forcing the quarterback back to the angle route as the true answer against that shell.

Usage Tips

Motion the H presnap and watch how the defense reacts, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are staring at man coverage and the angle route becomes a layup against a linebacker in space.

Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he widens to the flat motion man or bites on the run action the angle route from the backfield will be wide open working across his face.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the angle route only needs a few yards of separation to pick up the down and distance.

Pair this with Mtn H Angle N Out or Mtn H Angle N Up from the same set so the defense cannot key on the angle concept alone, forcing linebackers to respect multiple breaks off the same look.

If the defense shows two deep safeties presnap, hot route the corner route to a shallow crosser to avoid throwing into a zone drop that sits on the sideline break.
