Breakdown

Mtn Triple Option Lt is a run play out of the Shotgun Split Y Off set with 21 personnel that runs the classic triple option to the left side. The diagram shows motion across the formation before the snap, with the quarterback reading the mesh point between the dive back (yellow arrow cutting upfield) and the pitch back trailing outside (red arrow sweeping wide left). Blocking is executed at the point of attack up front while the QB progresses through the read: hand off the dive, keep and run, or pitch to the trailing back based on how the defensive end and edge defender react.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end, if he sits and reads instead of crashing, that is your first key to pull and progress to the pitch. Check overhang defender depth before the snap, a walked up nickel or Sam linebacker signals a run blitz that can blow up the mesh point quickly. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post-snap, that indicates the defense is selling out to stop the option and you should trust the pitch phase getting to the numbers. Man coverage with tight alignment on the perimeter often leaves the pitch lane exposed since defenders are locked in coverage assignments rather than filling gaps. Heavy zone shells with linebackers sitting in run fits are the toughest matchup for this concept, since disciplined defenders can play both dive and pitch simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 2nd and short to medium) when you have numbers in the box and want to stress edge defenders horizontally.

Check the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are crashing hard on run motion this play punishes overaggressive fits with the pitch phase.

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down, that tells you whether the perimeter is light enough for the pitch read to hit.

Pair this with Mtn Lead Swing and Mtn H Angle out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the option keys and play-action shots from identical formation looks.

Take the keep phase yourself in user-controlled QB scenarios if the dive is taken away and the pitch lane is not fully developed, protecting the ball is priority one on the mesh.
