Y Curl out of Shotgun Split Y Off is a five man route concept built around a curl from the Y (TE) sitting down over the middle at the sticks, flanked by two deep outside routes that stretch the defense horizontally. The blue route out of the backfield runs a corner style breakout to the left flat while the yellow routes on the right work a deep out and a vertical seam, creating a natural high low read on that side. This is a zone beater at its core, using the curl to sit in soft spots between linebacker and safety zones, with the primary read progression starting at the Y curl, then working to the right side flat/corner combo if the middle is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers sitting at intermediate depth before the snap, since a shaded hook defender directly over the Y curl signals a zone drop that will contest the primary read. Two deep safeties pre-snap usually mean Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which leave the curl window open against the underneath zone defenders. A single high safety cheating toward the curl side is a strong indicator of Cover 3 or Cover 1, which puts an underneath defender in position to jump the sitting route and forces the quick out hot route adjustment. Post-snap, key on the flat defender to the right, since a squatting corner or linebacker there can undercut both the flat and the deep out, killing the high low read on that side. If you see a delayed blitz off the edge or a user controlled defender spying the middle of the field, get the ball out on the curl quickly before the pocket collapses.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two high safety shells since the Y curl will find soft grass between the hook zones against Cover 2 and Cover 4 look. Against man coverage, hot route the Y curl into a quick out or speed out to create separation off the break since sitting routes get jumped by man defenders with underneath help. Use this on third and medium to third and long situations where the sticks line up with the curl depth for a reliable conversion throw. Pair this with Backs Cross or Wheel Trail from the same set to keep linebackers honest, since both plays attack similar landmarks but manipulate flow in opposite directions. If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, check the deep out route on the right as a quick alert throw before the protection breaks down.
