The primary read progression starts with the flat or spacing route to the trips or twin side, works back to the stick concept over the middle, and finishes with the swing back as the last resort against pressure or a rolled up coverage shell.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first: if he sinks with the swing route or widens too far, the underlying spacing routes will have soft grass to work with. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers in zone drops can jump the stick route and turn it into a user pick, so be ready to move on to the swing route if you see early linebacker reaction. Against Cover 2, key the corners: if they squat on the flat routes expecting a quick throw, look to the deeper spacing route sitting behind them for a bigger chunk gain. Man coverage with no underneath help shuts this play down quickly since spacing concepts rely on zone leverage, so audible out or check to a man beater if you see Cover 1 or Cover 0 pre-snap. Watch for a user linebacker spying the swing route or a lurking defender sitting in the throwing lane to the flat since that indicates the defense has scouted the swing as your checkdown and will jump it late.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you expect zone coverage since the spacing routes are designed to exploit soft zone landmarks rather than beat man leverage.

Identify the coverage shell pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties in a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, target the spacing routes underneath since the corners will sink into their zones and open passing lanes.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or a single high safety, prioritize the swing route to attack the flat before the flat defender can widen and get depth.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see man coverage and need a faster answer than the base spacing concept provides.
