Mtn Lead Swing

Breakdown

Mtn Lead Swing is a run-heavy RPO look out of Shotgun Split Y Off with 21 personnel, built around inside zone action with a lead blocker and a swing route release to the flat as the perimeter conflict piece. The offensive line and lead back sell downhill zone blocking while the H-back or second running back releases on the swing, forcing second and third level defenders to declare on the run fit before the quarterback pulls the ball. Primary read starts with the read defender on the mesh point: if he crashes down on the run action, pull and hit the swing back in space, if he sits or widens, hand off into the lead blocking scheme for a north south gain.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender or overhang linebacker at the snap, if he crashes hard on the run fit the quarterback will pull and throw the swing immediately. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with aggressive linebackers are vulnerable here because the underneath defenders bite on run action, leaving the swing lane wide open. Match zone or Cover 4 with disciplined linebackers who stay square and slow play the mesh point can shut this down, forcing a tougher handoff into a stacked box. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can be exposed since the swing route serves as a built-in answer against pressure, so track edge rushers post-snap to see if they widen or crash. User-controlled defenders spying the swing back or sitting in a shallow lurk zone are the biggest threat, watch for a defender staying home on the running back instead of following the zone flow.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check the alignment of the overhang defender or slot corner over your swing back, this is the read key for the whole concept.

Use this on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are more likely to load the box expecting a standard run, since the swing route punishes overaggressive fits.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, hot route the swing back to a quick flat or leave the RPO read on to get a free access throw before the pressure arrives.

Pair this with Outside Zone or Inside Zone Split in the same set to keep the defense honest on run fits, then come back to Mtn Lead Swing once linebackers start sprinting downhill on run action.

Sequence this with Mtn PA HB Seam or Mtn H Angle N Out later in the drive so defenders who bit on the swing key get burned by play-action shots off similar formation and motion.
