Breakdown

Y Lead Read Opt 1 is a read option run play out of Shotgun Slot Right with 11 personnel, built to attack the edge with a lead blocker in front of the QB. The quarterback reads the play side defensive end: if the end crashes down on the running back, the QB pulls the ball and follows the Y (tight end) lead blocker to the perimeter, and if the end stays wide, the RB gets the give on the inside track. This is a run play designed to punish overaggressive edge defenders and gap-exchange rules, not a pass concept or RPO despite the option label.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and force defender first: if he squeezes down inside to take away the give, the QB pull and edge lane opens up behind the Y lead block. Identify the alignment of the strong side linebacker or overhang defender, since a walked-up defender in the alley can blow up both the pull and the edge run if he stays disciplined off the snap. Look for safety rotation pre-snap, because a single high safety usually means an extra body in the box which makes the edge tougher to win, while two high safeties often signal a lighter box favoring this concept. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flying downhill on the mesh point, since a well timed user blitz off the edge or contain player who does not respect the option can force a bad pull decision. This play struggles against disciplined scrape exchange linebackers and defensive ends trained to sit and read rather than commit, so if you see consistent scrape exchange technique from the CPU or user defense, move to a different concept in the set like Counter Y or Inside Zone Split.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment before the snap to predict how the read will play out, since a wide 9-technique end almost always means you should plan on pulling and bouncing outside. Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits rather than sub package or blitz. Motion the slot receiver across pre-snap to get a free read on man versus zone coverage and to potentially draw a defender out of the box. Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Alert Glance from the same set so the defense has to respect the pass tag off similar formation and personnel, keeping linebackers honest and slowing their run fits. If the defense keys the mesh point aggressively on early snaps, sequence into PA Deep Choice or PA Mtn Slide later in the drive to punish linebackers for crashing downhill.
