Y Lead Read Opt 1 is a read option run play out of Shotgun Slot Right with 11 personnel, built to attack the edge with a give or keep decision based on the defensive end crash. The blocking scheme sends the Y (tight end) as a lead blocker through the hole while the offensive line executes zone blocking to seal interior gaps, giving the QB a clean mesh point read. This is a run play with a built in option element, not a traditional RPO with a route tag, so the primary read progression is the QB reading the play side defensive end first (give to the HB if he crashes inside, pull and attack the edge if he sits or squeezes), then reading the edge defender or force player as the second key once the ball is pulled.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is sitting wide waiting to string out the option, expect the QB to give it inside quickly. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, stacked linebackers who stay square and read instead of flowing hard to the mesh point can blow up both the give and the keep. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra flow support leaves the edge vulnerable if the QB pulls, so outside cornerbacks need to stay disciplined in run support. User controlled defensive ends who crash down every time can be exploited by the keep read, but a spy or scrape exchange technique neutralizes the option entirely. Overloaded fronts or a nano blitz off the edge disrupt the mesh point timing, forcing a rushed give read and limiting the play to minimal yardage gains.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the defensive end into declaring his assignment before the snap, since this play lives and dies on that first read.

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, this play struggles against heavy run fits with an extra safety cheated down.

If the defense shows a hard crash end every snap, pair this with PA Mtn Slide or PA Switch Choice out of the same Slot Right set to freeze the second level defenders with play-action off the same run action look.

Against aggressive user defensive ends flying upfield, pull the ball immediately and get outside before the flowing linebackers can wrap the edge.

Sequence this with RPO Alert Glance or RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the option keeper and a quick bubble or glance throw, keeping the second level defenders honest.
