Slants out of Shotgun Slot Right (11 personnel) is a quick-hitting man beater built around three slant routes breaking to the same side, with a single deep comeback/dig from the backside X to hold the corner. Both slot receivers and the outside receiver on the left run slants that cross the formation, creating natural rub action against man coverage, while the right side X runs a comeback breaking away from the slant traffic to occupy the far corner. The primary read progression starts with the inside slant (the shortest, quickest-developing route) and works outward to the intermediate slant, using the backside comeback only if the defense rolls a single-high shell and vacates that space.
Read the corner alignment before the snap, tight press corners on the trips side signal man coverage that the slant rub will exploit immediately. Identify single-high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3), since the backside comeback becomes the alert route when the deep half is vacated to that side. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow middle hook zone, he is the primary threat to jump the inside slant and take away the first read. Key the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he widens with the outside slant it opens a throwing lane for the middle slant behind him. Beware of Cover 2 zone drops, since two deep safeties can squeeze the intermediate slant windows and force a checkdown or held ball if the quick read is not there immediately.
Get the ball out fast on the inside slant, this route wins against both man and zone if you time the throw before the second-level defenders can drive on it.
Pre-snap, look for press man or off-man corners on the trips side, the rub concept from the stacked slants will beat man coverage almost every time if the throw is on time.
Against zone blitz or Cover 3 sink, work the middle slant into the hole vacated by the flat defender before the underneath zone can convert and wall off the route.
Use this on early downs or third and short to stay ahead of the chains, since all three slants develop in under two seconds and protect against interior pressure.
Pair this with PA Deep Choice or Verticals from the same set to keep the defense honest on the slant window, then hit them with the play-action shot once they start jumping the quick throws.
