Counter Y is a Shotgun power run play out of the Slot Right 11 personnel set that pulls a lineman across the formation to kick out the edge defender while the Y (TE) and playside blockers lead through the hole. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step away from the play call before pressing back toward the strong side behind the pulling guard, with the offensive line down blocking to seal the interior gaps. This is a base run concept designed to attack gap exchanges and force linebackers to fit downhill, not a pass or RPO look, so the primary read is the pulling guard's kick out block into the alley to determine cutback versus downhill lane.
Defensive Reads
This run beats light boxes and defenses that flow hard to initial motion or the counter step misdirection, especially base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts without gap discipline. Key the playside defensive end and edge setter pre-snap, if he is crashing inside on the counter action the pulling blocker will kick him out and create a wide cutback lane. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, downhill run blitz linebackers who key the backfield too fast will overrun the counter and open the cutback for a chunk gain. Stacked fronts and gap exchange defenses with a scraping linebacker who stays home on the backside can blow this play up before the pulling guard gets set. User controlled defenders reading pull blocking on the offensive line and staying disciplined on the backside cutback lane are the biggest threat to shutting this run down.
Usage Tips
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when the defense shows a light box or has not adjusted to counter action. Watch pre-snap for linebacker depth and edge defender leverage, if the defensive end is crashing hard down the line the counter kick out block will seal him for an easy cutback lane. Pair Counter Y with Inside Zone Split and HB Iso from this same set to keep linebackers honest on downhill reads before hitting them with the counter misdirection. Against aggressive blitz packages, this play punishes overpursuit since the counter step sells a different direction and slows down linebacker fills. Use play action shots like PA Deep Choice or PA Mtn Slide later in a series once you have established Counter Y to freeze safeties on the counter step fake.
