HB Iso out of Shotgun Slot Right is a downhill power run play that lines up with a lead blocker (FB or H-back type) attacking straight through the A or B gap ahead of the ball carrier. The diagram shows the offensive line firing off the ball in a straight-ahead blocking scheme with the lead blocker (marked in red) leading through the hole to seal the first second-level defender, while the HB follows directly behind. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a physical run scheme designed to beat aggressive fronts and light boxes by isolating one defender for the lead blocker to remove. The primary read progression is patience: identify the lead blocker's kick-out or seal block, then hit the hole downhill once the isolated defender is engaged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth: if the Mike and Will are sitting tight to the line at four yards or less, they are ready to fill the iso hole quickly. Watch for a defensive coordinator sending extra run support from depth, particularly a safety walked down into the box, which overloads the point of attack and stuffs the iso. Post-snap, the primary defensive counter is a quick-fill linebacker who reads the lead blocker's path and attacks downhill before the hole develops, so scrape exchange defenses shut this down. Nano blitzes or A-gap pressure from a Mike linebacker can beat this play before the lead blocker gets a clean angle, especially if the offense does not adjust protection. If the defense shows a two-high shell with light box numbers, that is the green light to run HB Iso since the lead blocker only has to handle one true run fit defender.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run HB Iso into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the lead blocker can only handle one isolated defender.
Use the right stick or L2/LT to manually control the lead blocker and aim the block at the most dangerous second-level defender, usually the Mike linebacker or a blitzing safety.
Run this play on early downs (first or second and short to medium) to keep the offense on schedule and set up play-action shots later in the drive.
Pair HB Iso with RPO Alert Glance or RPO Read Y Flat from the same set so the defense has to respect both the downhill run and the quick perimeter throw, forcing linebackers to hesitate.
Avoid calling HB Iso against stacked fronts with an extra defender walked into the box, since the lead blocker cannot account for a numbers disadvantage.
