HB Iso out of Shotgun Slot Right is a straight power run play designed to hit the interior with a lead blocker paving the way. The diagram shows the fullback or lead blocker isolating the second level defender directly ahead of the running back's path, with the offensive line executing down blocks and combo blocks to seal the interior gaps. This is a pure run scheme, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the play side gap for the blocking lead, letting the lead blocker identify and smash the first defender that shows in the hole so the ball carrier can pick his path off that block.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment, since HB Iso struggles when linebackers are stacked tight to the line in a blitz look rather than at normal run fit depth. Watch for safety rotation into the box before the snap, because an extra run defender added late can outnumber your blocking scheme and blow up the play at the mesh point. Post-snap, key the lead blocker's target defender first, since that block dictates whether the running back has a clean crease or has to bounce outside. User controlled defenders flowing hard downhill from depth can beat this play if they diagnose run quickly, so mixing in play action from this same personnel and set keeps that user honest. This play is vulnerable to gap exchange or A gap blitzes designed to occupy the lead blocker and force a negative play, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz situations.

Usage Tips

Use HB Iso when you see light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, especially against nickel or dime personnel that leaves you a numbers advantage up front.

Attack base 4-3 and 4-4 fronts where the linebackers are stacked at depth, since the lead blocker can climb and seal before the second level defenders read run.

Pair this with RPO Alert Glance or RPO Alert Bubble out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the interior run action and quick perimeter throws off similar formation looks.

On third and short or second and short, call HB Iso to force the defense to commit extra bodies to the box, then follow up with PA Deep Choice or PA Mtn Slide to punish safeties who cheat down.

Avoid this play against heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing the A and B gaps unless you have hot routed your lead blocker to adjust the point of attack.
