Read Option is a shotgun run play out of Slot Right with 11 personnel that puts the QB in a true zone read with the HB running to the playside as the mesh point defender crashes down. The QB reads the unblocked edge defender at the mesh point: if he squeezes down on the HB the QB pulls it and works the edge, and if he widens or crashes upfield the QB hands it off for the interior lane created by down blocks from the offensive line. This is a base run concept designed to attack gap-exchange or overly aggressive fronts rather than a specific coverage shell, and there are no route concepts shown since it is a designed QB read run with no pass option attached.

Defensive Reads

As the defense, key the mesh point immediately after the snap since the QB read is live and the ball can go either direction. Play the edge defender with contain discipline and do not let him crash upfield or get sealed inside, since that is exactly the trigger that makes the QB pull and run. Spy or scrape the play side linebacker to close the alley in case the QB keeps it, since a slow scrape exchange leaves a wide open running lane. Stacking the box with an extra defender or calling a run blitz that keeps the edge defender square can shut this down completely by forcing a give into traffic. Watch for a user controlled linebacker crashing down too early since a disciplined read forces a bad handoff read and a negative or minimal gain.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs and short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run with heavier fronts. Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker before the snap to see if he is crashing hard or sitting to contain the option. If the defense shows a wide 9 technique or a defender flying upfield off the edge, keep the ball and attack the alley with the QB since the read favors the pull. Pair this with Speed Option and QB Slot Option from the same set to keep the defense guessing on who actually has the ball, since all three plays start with a similar mesh point look but attack different lanes. Sprinkle in PA Bubble or RPO Alert Bubble afterward to punish linebackers who start cheating downhill anticipating the option run.
