Speed Option out of Shotgun Slot Right is a true triple option style run play, pairing the QB and HB on a pitch relationship to the right side of the formation. The offensive line down blocks to seal the point of attack while the QB rides the mesh point, reading the edge defender before deciding to keep it himself or pitch to the HB trailing outside. This is a pure run concept with no route combos, designed to attack the perimeter and force a numbers disadvantage on the edge defender rather than beat man or zone coverage through the air.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the defensive end or outside linebacker on the play side before the snap, since that is the exact defender the QB will read after the snap. If the defense shows a scrape exchange or a defender specifically assigned to play the pitch, expect this play to be shut down quickly, so have a counter or inside zone ready as a changeup. User controlled defenders who fly down hard on the QB open up the pitch lane, so track any manual crash toward the mesh point as your green light to distribute outside. Stacked fronts or run blitzes with extra defenders selling contain can bait a bad pitch read, so be ready to disguise the option look with Y Lead Read Opt 1 or Counter Y from the same set. Off coverage safeties who stay deep instead of filling downhill give the HB extra room once the pitch is delivered, so use pre-snap safety depth to gauge how much space is really available on the edge.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or in short yardage situations when you have a speed threat at HB and a mobile QB who can actually threaten the edge. Pre-snap, count defenders in the box and check for an unblocked edge defender who is the direct read key for the option. If the defense is showing a heavy box with extra run support, consider audibling to a play-action or RPO from this same Slot Right set to punish overaggressive linebackers. Take the pitch immediately if the edge defender crashes down on the QB, and keep it up inside if that same defender sits and widens to take away the pitch lane. Sequence this play with Read Option and QB Slot Option from the same formation so the defense cannot key on your run action pre-snap, then mix in RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Alert Glance once you see linebackers start cheating toward the option side.
