RPO Alert Glance is a true run-pass option out of Shotgun Slot Right that pairs an inside zone run with a glance route (a hard slant/skinny post hybrid) from the slot receiver. The QB reads the alert defender, typically the play-side linebacker or slot defender, and either hands off the ball on the give read or pulls it to throw the glance if that defender crashes down on the run fit. This play is a zone beater against light boxes and works as a man beater when the slot corner is playing off or inside leverage, since the glance route attacks the middle of the field before the linebacker can recover.
Defensive Reads
Watch the second level defender aligned over or near the slot receiver before the snap, since he is the direct alert key for the RPO. Man coverage with the slot defender playing inside leverage is vulnerable to the glance, since the route breaks away from that leverage immediately. Zone shells with linebackers sitting in short hook or curl zones tend to bait the give read, so respect run fits and check if the alert defender is reading run first. User-controlled defenders who spy the slot receiver or jump the glance route pre-snap can bait a bad throw, so confirm the AI or user is not sitting on the route before pulling the ball. Blitz packages that send extra defenders through the play-side run gap without dropping a defender into the glance window are the biggest risk, since the ball must come out immediately or the QB gets sacked.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check the alignment of the alert key, usually the second or third level defender closest to the slot receiver.
If the defender sits at depth or shows zone drop, take the run read and let your line work the inside zone blocking scheme downhill.
If the alert defender steps up to fill the run gap immediately after the snap, pull the ball and throw the glance route before the window closes.
Use this on early downs in run-heavy personnel to keep defenses honest, then sequence into RPO Read Y Flat or RPO Read WR Screen later in a series once the defense starts cheating a safety down to stop the glance.
Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, hot route the backside receiver into a quick option or hitch to give yourself an outlet if the alert read is late.
This play pairs well with HB Iso and Inside Zone Split as a run-action tempo package, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap.
