Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is a shotgun run play out of the Slot Right 11 personnel set, built with a zone blocking scheme up front designed to give the RB a track to read defensive flow. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping in unison with an inside zone slide protection, while the HB path cuts across the formation with a split action look before working downhill through the play side gap. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression starts with the playside double team at the point of attack, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gap gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box and identify if the defense has rotated a safety down into the run fit, since an eighth man in the box kills the cutback window. Key the playside linebacker's first step: if he flows hard to the play call side, the backside cutback lane will be there against the zone blocking slide. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap pre-snap, since a spy or plugged run fit defender takes away the primary track and forces a bounce. This play struggles against gap exchange and slanting fronts that cross the zone blocking assignments, so avoid calling it into odd fronts stacked with extra DL. It beats light boxes and base 4-3 or 3-4 looks where linebackers are reading run flow late, especially when the defense is playing off coverage on the perimeter.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.

Use the split action to manipulate linebacker eyes, since the flow motion can hold second level defenders just long enough to open the cutback lane.

Pair this with RPO Alert Glance or RPO Alert Bubble out of the same Slot Right shell so the defense has to respect the perimeter throw before committing to the run fit.

On early downs, run this play behind base personnel fronts and avoid it against heavy blitz packages that stack extra bodies inside the tackle box.

Mix in Y Lead Read Opt 1 or QB Slot Option from this set to keep linebackers honest on the mesh point and prevent them from crashing the frontside gap immediately.
