Y Lead Read Opt is a Shotgun Slot Right run concept out of 11 personnel that features a QB/HB read option to the strong side with a lead blocker in front. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping in unison to seal the play side while the TE (Y) works across the formation as the lead blocker on the edge, kicking out or leading through the alley depending on the defensive end's crash. The QB reads the unblocked defensive end, either handing off to the HB on the give path or pulling and attacking the edge himself, making this a true zone read run play rather than a pass concept.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap; if he stays wide and unblocked, expect the QB to keep and attack the edge himself. Check linebacker depth at the snap since fast-flowing linebackers who crash hard on the mesh point will get gashed by the QB keep if contain is not set. Identify the force defender (usually the strong safety or overhang corner) since he decides whether the QB or HB path wins on the perimeter. This play is vulnerable to scrape exchange fronts and disciplined edge defenders who stay home rather than crashing on the RB, so heavy edge blitz packages with contain rules can shut it down. Zone coverage shells that keep numbers in the box (Cover 3 with a run support safety) are the toughest matchup since they outnumber the lead blocker and remove the cutback lane.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are still respecting run/pass balance out of Shotgun.
Pre-snap, count the box and check for an extra defender crashing down; if the play side is stacked, consider audibling to a bubble or perimeter throw instead.
Key the defensive end's alignment before the snap; a wide 9-technique tells you the QB pull read will be easier since the crash lane opens for the HB.
Pair this with RPO Alert Glance or RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run fit without exposing the perimeter.
Use manual control on the lead blocking TE (Y) after the snap to seal the most dangerous defender in the alley if the CPU blocker misreads the fit.
