The inside receiver runs a slant across the middle while the outside receiver works a quick flat route underneath, giving the quarterback a run/pass conflict read off the second level defender. The backside X is isolated on a vertical release while the TE stays in as a run threat, making this a true RPO built to punish linebackers who crash down on the run fake. Primary read is the peek slant read key (usually a linebacker or slot defender), then progress to the flat if the slant window is closed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment, if they are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage expect the offense to pull the RPO trigger on the slant instead of handing it off. Watch for a nickel or slot defender sitting in the peek read window, if he stays home and doesn't bite on the run fake he can jump the slant and create a turnover opportunity. Man coverage on the outside flat receiver with tight leverage can bait the quarterback into a contested throw, use a user controlled defender to squat on that route. Zone shells with linebackers scraping hard to the run side leave the slant window open, so spy the middle of the field with a safety or use a Mike linebacker in a hook zone to close that passing lane. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders into the box can confuse the RPO read key entirely, since the quarterback may misjudge numbers and throw into pressure, so disguise blitzes late to bait a bad decision.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense is in a run-fit look with linebackers stacked tight, since that triggers the run RPO conditions. Use the peek read key indicator to decide instantly between handing off or throwing the slant, don't hesitate once the ball is snapped. Against man coverage, the slant becomes a quick rhythm throw versus off corners or nickel defenders playing outside leverage. Against zone shells, use the flat route as a zone beater underneath if linebackers sink to cover the slant window.
