RPO Glance Post out of Flex Y Off Wk lines up with a bunch/off-set look to the weak side, giving you a glance route working inside off the mesh point along with a shallow crosser cutting the field underneath it, while the backside runs a post from depth attacking the deep middle. The offensive line runs an inside zone blocking scheme with the RB reading the box count on the give, so this is a true run/pass option, not straight play-action. Your primary read starts pre-snap with the box count and second-level flow: if the defense stays honest against the run, you pull and throw the glance immediately against a widening linebacker, and if the box is light you hand it off, with the post as your alert throw versus a single-high shell that leaves the deep middle exposed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment first: a two-high shell tells you the post is likely capped and you should prioritize the run or the glance instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since aggressive run-fits from Mike or Will linebackers open up the glance throwing lane immediately. Man coverage on the inside receiver with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light for the post, since it turns into a one-on-one vertical shot. User-controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or spying the RB can jump the glance route, so be ready to look off or hold the ball a beat if you see a defender squatting underneath. Heavy blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge or through the A-gap can be answered by the quick glance since it gets the ball out before pressure arrives, but a well-timed inside blitz that also drops a hook defender into the glance window will shut this play down.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the box against your blockers to decide whether the run or the RPO throw is live.
Use the glance as your rapid-fire answer versus man coverage since it beats inside leverage instantly off the snap, especially against Mike or Will linebackers who bite on run action.
Save the post read for situations where you diagnose single-high safety shells pre-snap, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the deep middle void that the post exploits.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on one specific RPO tag and has to respect the run fake every time.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) where defenses are more willing to load the box, giving you access to the quick glance throw for a schemed positive gain.
