Doubles Flex Y Off Close is the compressed cousin of the standard Shotgun Doubles family. Instead of splitting both slot receivers wide into balanced 2x2 spacing, this set pulls the tight end off the ball and tucks him tight to the formation while the flex receiver aligns inside the numbers. You still get 11 personnel with two receivers to each side, but the reduced splits change every leverage read the defense has to make. Corners have less field to defend outside, safeties have to declare earlier, and the off-ball tight end can release cleanly without fighting through a defensive end at the line of scrimmage.
The alignment matters most for your slot and tight end. Because the Y is detached and tucked close, he releases into the seam or the flat with a free path, which makes concepts like Y-Sail, Y Stick, and Mtn Dagger Y In extremely reliable against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. Meanwhile the compressed flex receiver forces nickel defenders to align inside, opening up the sideline for corners, sails, and switch releases. Mtn Switch Corner and Mtn Slot Post punish that inside leverage immediately, and against man coverage the tight splits create natural rub traffic that Madden's man defenders struggle to navigate.
The run and RPO menu is what separates this set from pure passing looks. Inside Zone, Read Option, RPO Zone Peek Glance, Zone Fake Jet, and PA Zone Fk Jet all live here, and the tucked tight end gives you an extra body at the point of attack without tipping heavy personnel. That means you can run tempo out of one alignment and keep the defense guessing between the glance route, the zone read give, and the jet fake, which is exactly the kind of decision overload that breaks user defenders who commit early.
Read the safety count pre-snap. Single high means go to Mtn Slot Post or Mtn Switch Corner to attack the void behind the seam defender. Two high means work Y-Sail and Y Stick underneath into the flat.
Motion the flex receiver across the formation to identify man versus zone, then use RPO Zone Peek Glance if the linebacker travels or Inside Zone if the defense stays static.
On third and medium, run PA Snag or Y Stick and hot route the HB to a flat or angle for a built in blitz answer that beats mug looks.
Use Mtn HB Slot Screen after you have established Inside Zone and Zone Fake Jet, since the linebackers will be flowing hard downhill and the compressed receivers give you instant blockers in space.
In the red zone, Redzone Scissors and Mtn HB Fade both exploit tight man coverage in a shortened field where the compressed splits give your receivers more room toward the sideline.
