Breakdown
Flood H Post is a three level flood concept to one side of the field designed to overload a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell. The outside receiver runs a deep post to occupy the deep third or the safety over the top, the slot receiver runs a corner route into the vacated intermediate zone, and the H back releases to the flat underneath for the short outlet. The offensive line shows a standard pass protection look with no play action or RPO elements, and the primary read progression works high to low: post first to see if it splits the safety, then corner route into the void, then the flat route underneath as the checkdown against a hard closing defense.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the free safety depth and leverage, a single high safety cheating to the flood side is the biggest tell that the post route will have a crease. Watch the flat defender, if a linebacker or corner sinks too early into the flat, the corner route window opens up immediately behind him. Post-snap, key any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the intermediate zone, since that is exactly where the corner route wants to work and a smart user rob will shut down the second read. Against Cover 4 or Cover 2, the deep post can get squeezed by two deep defenders, so expect the quarterback to work down to the flat route quickly in that shell. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can beat this play before routes develop, so identify pre-snap blitz alignment and be ready to check to the flat route as a quick answer.
Usage Tips
Attack Cover 3 shells since the corner route sits right in the deep third seam vacated by the flat footed corner.
Use pre-snap motion or a look at the free safety alignment to confirm single high coverage before snapping, since two high shells can rob the post read.
If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the flat route into a quick out or speed out to give yourself a faster underneath option against man beaters.
Pair this play with Y-Sail or Mtn Slot Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a true flood and a stick or slot post concept, forcing linebackers to widen their drops.
Best called on early downs or medium to long yardage situations where you have time to work through the full three level progression instead of needing an instant conversion throw.
